Want to try out a class? Just drop in - no bookings required

Located in the heart of Carlton North, Rathdowne Yoga Room has been bringing Iyengar yoga to the community since 1987.

With over 25 years of yoga teaching experience and as director of Rathdowne Yoga Room since 1997, Frank Alberti’s pragmatic approach to Iyengar yoga is accessible and down-to-earth. Class sizes are small and friendly, ensuring individual attention is provided, and asanas (poses) are taught with the aid of props and equipment to ensure students practise safely and within their own range of ability.

Iyengar style yoga emphasises balanced body alignment, strength and flexibility, leading to improved stamina and concentration. The Iyengar approach allows people of all ages, levels of health and fitness to enjoy the benefits of yoga practice, including the ability to face the physical, mental and emotional challenges of contemporary life with strength, vitality, mobility, thoughtfulness and equanimity. Current students range in age from 20 to 84 years old! Find out more

Rathdowne Yoga Room is fully equipped with yoga mats, belts, blankets, blocks and bolsters as well as a wall of ropes to practice inversions and other hanging poses. Students are also welcome to bring their own mats.

I discovered Rathdowne Yoga Room as a uni student in 2000 and became passionate about Iyengar. Ever since I have gone out of my way to attend Frank’s classes. Due to Frank’s superlative awareness and knowledge of the body my yoga practice has advanced considerably and I’ve even converted my parents to Iyengar!

I started as a beginner in 2008 and haven't stopped since (despite moving to a farther suburb). Frank's teaching style uses musculoskeletal dummies to clearly explain the process and effects of asanas/postures. Though spiritual aspects of Yoga are not taught here, the positive side-effects of using awareness/consciousness will eventually make you more mindful/peaceful.

I have been practising yoga on and off for the last 20 years, and came to the Rathdowne Yoga Room about 2 years ago, after my last yoga instructor gave up teaching. From the start, I have appreciated the small class sizes and the individual attention that Frank provides to all students - something that is not practical at many yoga schools. I feel that this personal approach to teaching has enabled my yoga to improve more in the last couple of years, than in all of my previous experience.
